Jeju Island is South Korea's answer to paradise – a volcanic oasis where turquoise waters meet dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls tumble into hidden valleys. I arrived via a quick flight from Seoul and immediately felt the island's different pace of life.
Seongsan Ilchulbong, the tuff cone peak that rises dramatically from the sea, offered one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever witnessed. Hiking to the crater rim at dawn, I joined a handful of other early risers in watching the sky transform from starry darkness to golden daylight. The 90-minute climb was worth every step.
The famous female divers of Jeju, haenyeo, still practice their ancient trade without oxygen tanks. Watching them surface with shells and sea urchins from the jade-colored water was a window into a way of life that defies the modern age. Their strength and grace humbled me completely.
Island life centered on fresh seafood – abalone porridge, grilled mackerel, and the spiciest seafood soup I've ever encountered. Riding a scooter along the coastal road with the wind in my hair, I discovered hidden beaches and dramatic sea stacks that seemed to belong on another planet entirely.
